STREETWISE

'Streetwise' is a targeted national grassroots development program designed to offer youth from all walks of life the opportunity to become actively involved in skateboarding in Australia.

StreetWise provides youth in all areas of Australia with the opportunity to be involved in skateboarding clinics conducted by some of Australia's best skaters who have completed the Australian Sports Commissions (ASC) National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) skateboarding course.

The one or two day clinics embrace the principle of continued learning to stretch beyond boundaries and include a Mammoth Skate Pack for all participants..

The feeling that youth get from watching elite skateboarding is one of awe and excitement. The young brain gets ultra curious as to how one makes the skateboard flip, slide and rotate, yet somehow remain magnetized on the skaters feet. Unlike a movie with special effects and illusions, the viewer of skateboarding has no choice but to believe that tricks are entirely possible! That itself is enough for a kid to get exited and active in the world of skateboarding.

Usually, it’s the big spectacle that gets youth hyped on things like skateboarding, thus motivating them to learn and refine the art form. The Island will be no different…well maybe a little better. See, most competitions are isolated to just that, a competition. SbA thought it would be a good idea to teach skateboarding to anyone eager in the 5-week lead-up to The Island. That way, all the beginners ‘practicing the push’ and ‘learning the lingo’ can be better educated – what SbA like to call StreetWise - to the complex wizardry that they will no doubt see come December 10. Whether it be understanding why Jack Kirk is sliding his tailslide 'backside', or noticing nobody is pushing with their front foot, it can be assumed new skateboarders who come out to StreetWise Learn To Skate Sessions during The Island lead-up will be enthusiastic, exercised, thought provoked, and ultimately stoked to be a part of SbA’s presence on Cockatoo Island.

One more thing needs to be mentioned. Some of the Skateboarding Coaches will be in the Competition! To learn from the best, here is what you need to know…

  • Sessions are every Saturday and Sunday.
  • November: 5/6, 12/13, 19/20, 26/27, and December: 3/4.
  • Session 1: 10:30am – 12:30pm, max 24 skaters.
  • Session 2: 1:30pm- 3:30pm, max 24 skaters.
  • Helmets are mandatory for participants aged 14 and under, and highly recommended for all beginners for obvious reasons.
  • Anyone who wants to learn skateboarding is welcome.

About the OUTPOST PROJECT.

outpost

Cockatoo Island's vast abandoned factories and intriguing forgotten alleyways are the perfect backdrop for projects showcasing the energy and diversity of Street Art. With OUTPOST PROJECT, visitors will be able to see a huge range of Street Art in one location. And because of its dynamic and live nature, the art will change and evolve, giving visitors something different to see throughout the course of the festival.

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is proud to present an event of this scale, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, demonstrating Australia's leading role in the Street Art movement. Cockatoo Island's ongoing partnership with the Biennale, the Redbull X-Fighters in September and more recently the establishment of the Cockatoo Island Film Festival in 2012 is proof the World Heritage listed Cockatoo Island is the perfect backdrop for Sydney's most cultural events.
