STREETWISE

'Streetwise' is a targeted national grassroots development program designed to offer youth from all walks of life the opportunity to become actively involved in skateboarding in Australia.

StreetWise provides youth in all areas of Australia with the opportunity to be involved in skateboarding clinics conducted by some of Australia's best skaters who have completed the Australian Sports Commissions (ASC) National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) skateboarding course.

The one or two day clinics embrace the principle of continued learning to stretch beyond boundaries and include a Mammoth Skate Pack for all participants..

Workshop with a playful edge just ideal for Free Spirits

Skateboards were flown en-masses into Dubbo yesterday as 60 Aboriginal children took part in the two-day Streetwise workshop. Organised by Skateboarding Australia, the aim of the workshop was to encourage all youth the get active in a way that’s accessible and different.

Having coached 5000 Tony Hawks since 2006, the Streetwise crew know they are on to a good thing with figure showing 1.3 million, or 49% of youth aged between five and fourteen regularly skateboard outside of school hours.

Skateboarding Australia’s Richard Flude is a nationally recognized skater in his own right.

Mr Flude said the sport was more versatile than traditional pastimes and offered “groms” a vehicle of expression.

“It’s about making skateboarding accessible and appealing to all. Offering more people the chance to experience pure skateboarding is our goal. It’s promoting the mix of exercise, individuality, and friendship within a sport not bound by tradition or mass mentality.”

Sponsored by the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Acedemy, all places are free for the four-hour coaching session. Skaters are grouped according to their ability and given Streetwise product packs valued at $60.

Streetwise will be holding beginner sessions today and Narromine Skatepark from 9.30am to 11.30am and at Dubbo Skatepark from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. There are some pics of the Dubbo Streetwise Below.

Rebecca Schofield, Gambirrang Sporting Chance Project Officer - "Simon and Dougall were just great. The kids loved there coaching and were having a ball skateboarding. On their own time, they even came to the waterslide after the clinic which meant lots to the kids because they were really enjoying their company."
