Event #4 of the SbA Dew Series presented by Arnette visited Queensland’s Gold Coast for the first time in the series four year history. Thanks to multimillion dollar investments by the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC), the Gold Coast has become one greatest places to live in Australia if you’re a skater. Upgrades to Nerang, Elanora & Pizzey combined with new sites at Varsity the GCCC are leading the charge in terms of putting the money and resources in to skate facilities.  If only more councils could follow the Gold Coasts lead!

Thanks to the GCCC strong commitment to skateboarding SbA was able to relocate the event south from the Sunshine Coast to the world renown Pizzey Park. Fresh from a $1.1 million dollar make over which included new bowls and street sections along with an upgrade to the 90’s street section, Pizzey was once again ready to host some of the best junior skaters in the state.

Continuing with its recent form lines Queensland’s sunshine was replaced with rain and gusty winds that played havoc on 15 years & under division. Ever fearless and frothing to lock in some new lines; rain, hail or shine in the street section the youngest division had kids from as far north as Gympie competing.

The early front runner was Trent Riley who took down the rail with a fine display of variety and seeming less ease, the Caboolture local ended the day in 4th spot but won many a fan with the smooth skills. 3rd was taken out by Southport’s Rakei Garland, Rakei has some off the fastest smooth lines and his local knowledge was evident in the street/ tranny section of the park. That left Mike Mandoza (Reedy Creek) & Mitchell Morrison (Tallebudgera) as the other standouts and most difficult to split for the judges. Mandoza took down the rail with a number of smiths, feeble and crooked grinds to edge out Morrison in a close battle.

The 18 Years & Under Boys was flooded out with an hour’s rain delay and put a dampener onto proceedings, but the older lads were still keen to skate after the street section was dried out with brooms, blowers and towels. Jonny Clayton (Mudgeeraba) was unlucky to be beaten in the end by James Stuurman (Narangba) as the two skated hard on the slippery and still drying park.

Stuurman was able to handle the going a little smoother with flips and grinds on everything but the highlight was a huge pop shuv on the big bank. Clayton landed a sweet cannon ball over the box along with some fast grinds in the biggest quarter in the park.

18 Years & Under Girls Champion – Shanae Collins

The 18 Years & Under Girls saw three girls fighting out for the podium spots and prizes. Sisters Aimee & Ashlee Massie (Varsity) showed family fun can be had whilst competing. Aimee landed a few nice airs and a tuck knee over the spine. However it was Shanae Collins (Nobby’s) that blew everyone away with what could be claimed as the best skating seen in the girls division EVER. Shanae had plenty of technical tricks all over the park but in the end it was her big airs over the spine that got the crowd clapping.

It will be great to see Shanae and Aimme representing Queensland at the Australian finals in April.

That left the final division of the day to four of the best 18 Years & Under Sponsored skaters in the country, three of them that could also take the podium when they meet in Sydney for the Australian Finals. Three time Queensland champion Jesse Schulkins (Deception Bay), Buggs Fardell (Elanora) & Cody Shepard (Caloundra). Jesse nearly did the skate community a favor, but narrowly missed killing a kid on a scooter with a huge transfer from the bowl section to the street course first attempt. Jesse locked in a few board slides and grinds early in the street section that secured the win. Second went to Buggs who’s fast smooth lines that went for days, with Cody taking out third spot.

Let’s hope these three are all fit and firing for the finals in Sydney as they will destroy the street setup down south.
