Top Aussie skaters to battle it out for $20k at Darling Harbour

The second and final round of the country’s pinnacle skateboarding competition, the Mountain Dew Battle for Supremacy is to be held on February 6th. The one-day event will see 20 of our top skateboarders competing for $20,000.

The Mt Dew Battle at Darling Harbour will see the area known as Snake Garden into the ultimate skateboard spot – just for the day of the competition. The course will feature favourite real-world street obstacles such as picnic tables, cement freeway barriers, stairs and huge stone-topped banks. The event was created by recently crowned 2009 World Cup of Skateboarding Vert Champion, Renton Millar.

“Holding Mt Dew Battle for Supremacy at Darling Harbour means Australia’s top skaters have the opportunity to show skate fans and the public alike the skills our own local skaters possess. It is really important for the progression of the sport.

“One in three Australian six to 20-year-olds ride a skateboard, and many dream of someday competing at an international level. The Mt Dew Battle gives young up-and-coming Australian skateboarders the opportunity to get noticed and experience a pro level competition in their own backyard.”

The Sydney event will determine the overall national championship title, following the first round on 12 December 2009 of Dew Battle at Federation Square in Melbourne, where thousands of spectators watched Sydney skateboarder Bjorn Johnston win top spot. The two events follow on from the inaugural event in February 2009, held at Sydney’s Monster Skatepark.

*Top 20 Australian skaters competing in two rounds for $20,000 in prize money, total series prize purse is $40,000
*Contest starts at 2pm
